Day 11 - Turtmann-Unterems to Gasenried
This day we hiked up a long time, and the pass was the windiest and coldest that we’d seen yet.
The shadows being thrown were fun to watch.
The ascent towrds the top was very rocky.
We put on coats and gloves, but it was SO cold! I had to hold my hat, even with the strap, so that it didn’t fly away!
On the way down there was a lot of rock hopping.
It was nice to see the towns below as we walked.
You can see how quickly the clouds were moving.
After quite a bit of downhill we finally made it to the Jungen cable car. The ride was kind of scary because it was very steep and windy.
Our bags were on the outside and we didn’t really have a lot of time to think about what to do, but we (and our bags!) made it down safely to Saint Nicholas.
I loved the creativity of these flowers!
From the cable car we had a 2.6 mile hike straight up with 1,869 ft elevation gain!
It was very steep and tiring, but it was nice to walk through a working town rather than a tourist town. There were sheep, cows, and goats everywhere and people were farming and working.
We saw lots of neat mushrooms along the wooded path.
When we got to the Hotel Alpenrösli, and it felt like the best shower I’ve had in my life. I hadn’t washed my hair in three days, so it was nice to feel clean again.
This was the view outside our window, and we got to see the locals pick fresh vegetables from the small garden.
We were at the restaurant/hotel a week before it closed for the season, so they were out of a lot of things, but the meal we had was incredible. Grant had cholera and I had lentil soup.
