Day 4 - Verbier to Cabane de Louvie
This was one of my fvorite days of the hike! We were walking in and through the clouds for most of the day, and we saw more alpine ibex than I ever could have imagined.
We woke up feeling sore and it was a rainy morning, but we started the day with a beautiful gondola ride through the mist until it cleared and we got above the clouds.
We started the hike above the clouds at the top of the gondolda, and it was cool to see peeks of the city below as the clouds moved.
This was the first of our close encounters with cows. I was a little nervous with how close we had to walk by them, but they didn’t seem to mind.
It was a bit of a climb through a lot of rocks, and then we got back into the clouds.
It was truly incredible to hike along this ledge and be in the fast moving clouds. We got occasional views through them to the see the hills and towns below.
We got to this lookout spot and had a quick snack and applied more sunscreen, even with all the clouds.
After we got to our cabin that night, a fellow hiker said he had some photos he had taken of us. These are two of my favorite photos from the trip!
I loved this hike and had a hard time not taking photos every step of the way!
We started seeing our first views of alpine ibex, and from there we saw more than a dozen!
We continued along the mountain ledge, and at parts there were chains to use for safety.
This ibex was resting close to our summit for the day.
We made it to the summit, had a quick sandwich, and headed down towards our lodging for the night.
We got our first glimpse of the lake that we would sleep next to for the night.
The rest of the way from there was a steep downhill, and there were switchbaks here, which is rare compared to a lot of the trails on the Haute Route.
We finally made it to the cabin, which you can see on the left.
We did see a few more ibex very close to the cabin!
It was nice to have a cup of soup, a fruit tart, and wine to wind down after the day.
There was a beautiful place to refill our water.
I was happy to see that they had a cat!
This was our room for the night at Cabane de Louvie. There was no wifi or cell service at this place, and it was wonderful to meet fellow hikers that we would later see along the trail and at different hotels. The sleeping situation wasn’t my favorite, but it was a beautiful spot!
