Day 9 - Grimentz to Saint-Luc
We started out the day with a gondola ride into the most incredible views of the alps. The clouds moved so fast that you just caught glimpses of the mountains, and it was absolutely amazing!
The big gondola also required us to wear shoe slippers to protect the glass bottom.
View of Grimentz as we were ascending, and you can see our hotel in the bottom right corner.
Very quickly we were engulfed in the clouds.
There was another group on the gondola, but they went to the other side, so we had a lot of space to see the views.
We finally started to get above the cloud line near the top.
The clouds were moving so quickly that it was lucky to get a view the of mountian tops.
Being sick, I was especially grateful to skip a huge mountain ascent and descent. At the top we took a smaller gondola into the the town of Zinal.
View as we descended into Zinal.
It was a relatively chill day with a steep climb and then a sustained uphill hike all the way to the Hôtel Weisshorn.
We had a very steep hike right as we were leaving Zinal.
At the top of this hill leaving Zinal we saw a nice man on his patio and he offered us a coffee. He lived in a small house on the hill with his hound dog and was smoking a long pipe. It was so cute! We said no since we had already had quite a a bit of coffee and wanted to start the day, but it was a sweet offer.
We passed a lot of cows, and there was one on the wrong side of the fence. A French couple tried to corral it under the fence, and Grant jumped in to try and help, but unfortumately the cow wasn’t having it, so they eventually gave up.
The clouds were constantly moving, so it was nice to get peeks of the mountain tops as we hiked.
We had beautiful panoramic views of the alps for much of the day.
We walked along a ledge for a large part of the hike, and we had incredible views of the towns below.
We finally saw the Hôtel Weisshorn in the distance!
We had an Aperol spritz and a meat/cheese plate, and later on a nice 4 course dinner.
This place is old! The bathrooms are down the hall, everything squeaks, the floors are very uneven, and the ceiling is patched and wavy. It was a really cool and unique place to stay, and I slept surprisingly well!
