Zermatt - The Matterhorn
We woke up the day after we completed over 100 miles of the Haute Route thinking we would take a rest day, but the day was so perfectly clear that there was no way we could miss out hiking to the Matterhorn.
There was the perfect hike that ended at the Hörnlihütte.
When we first started the day I was worried that this would be the only clear picture we’d get of the Matterhorn (since it had been cloudy the other days), but this was just the beginning!
We had to get a photo in front of the sign!
From there the views got better and better as we got closer.
There were amazing views of the mountains in every direction.
There were some stairs along the route.
At the hut we saw a helicoptor dropping off supplies.
We had lunch and a beer at the hut.
Afterwards we headed up to hike the rest of the trail that we were able to climb without ropes.
At this point you can see the ladders that are required to climb from here.
I went as far as this ladder before we headed back. (I’m tiny, but in the middle of the photo)
Here you can see the hut on the left hand side.
The way down had incredible views as well, and the sunshine held out for us all day!
